Tuesday 17th March – walks ***** - sunny

Had a good night at the Maison of the Cascades Herrison, lovely and quiet but a tad cooler and woke to thick fog! Mag went for a walk up to see the first huge waterfall at 7.45, I got up, dressed made the bed and walked to join her for our first walk of the day, the mountain river once again looked stunning and when we returned to the van for breakfast the fog had almost gone to leave wall to wall sunshine with light winds:) While eating our porridge two Chamois were grazing in a field close-by, great way to start the day! Our plan was to drive to Bonlieu which proved much harder to find, we did pass the Lac which were like a mirror with loads of old boys out in boats fishing, we found a lovely belvedere with an amazing view down to another large Lac with around 40 boats out with fishermen, we eventually found our way to Bonlieu and found the small hotel we stayed once for a night many years ago when our boys were 7 and 10! We remember it well because there was a sign on the road next to the hotel for the Cascades du Herrions which we loved so drove down again to check them out. They were quite busy as we scrambled down river coming to the spot we reached yesterday where we spotted two dippers. We then walk up river to we reached a small bridge which lead to the fromagerie before returning to the van, we were surprised to have walked two miles! We then made our way to La Rousses where we have skied before, the snow looked good and it was very quiet but being fairly early we decided to continue onto to La Faucille just above the ski resort of Mojoux and once again the ski car park here was very quiet. We decided to park on the Col de Faucille and go for a walk to a Belvedere overlooking the Alps including the magnificent Mont Blanc, we did not bother with shoe shoes as the shoe was quite firm but the walk was further than we remember, up and down through the pine trees for 2 miles which was knackering and snow shoes might have made thing a little easier? We were relieved to make it to the seat with stunning views down to Geneva, Lac Lemon and the snowy Alps beyond just lovely in the nice sunshine! We were dreading the long walk back but it went surprisingly well but were shattered when we reached the van! Our plan then was to drive down to our parking spot at Mijoux but the snow looked thin so were not sure if the lift would be open so continued to Lelex where the snow also looked thin low down, Mag asked in the tourist information centre and they said you could ski down so headed to park only to find a no parking for campervans which was not there the last time we were here:( We thought about returning to Rousses but that was too far so returned to Mijoux and will hope the lower ski lift is open and the weather sunny so we can ski in the morning but to be honest we are not bothered either way!!! There a bit of a sunset before tea, I played my card games and it could be an early night as we are both knackered!!!
